We often think of captivity as chains or force. But in the modern era, the heaviest shackles are those we voluntarily put on ourselves out of a desire to look successful in front of strangers on the internet.

Decades ago, life was simple. People were respected for their character and what they genuinely possessed. There was no internet pushing people into a relentless competition of fake luxury. If there was food on the table and a roof overhead, that was enough. People lived within their means, far from forced exhibitionism.
Yet with the arrival of social media, everything changed.
Today, even young people with no independent income pressure their parents to buy them expensive phones, clothes, and shoes—not out of necessity, but simply to post them online. They want to project wealth, to pretend they are well-off, even if the purchase is funded by mounting piles of debt.
It is no surprise that various scams and false mentors have multiplied. Pastor Edwin once shared how he fell victim back in the year 2000 to a pyramiding scheme that promised massive returns. Like many others, he was lured by the promise of quick wealth. But the danger is far greater today because online shops and digital lending apps are right at our fingertips. With just an ID submission, debt is instantly approved. The result? Many look wealthy, but in reality, they are dying under the weight of debt.
It would be easy to assume this only happens to youth or compulsive show-offs. But I witnessed this world firsthand during my days working in a traditional office.
I frequently noticed female coworkers showing up in brand-new gadgets, ordering expensive meals online every day, and constantly buying cosmetics. Meanwhile, I sat quietly in the corner with a simple packed lunch. On the surface, they looked affluent and social. But behind the smiles and social media posts, I knew their lives were propped up by credit cards, online lending apps, and personal loans. Whatever remained of their salary went strictly to survival, often falling short and forcing them to borrow again.
They played the part of a prosperous life merely for the validation of others. They failed to realize that a day would come when they grow old, lose their utility in the company, and finally feel the bitter regret of wasting their youth and money on people who never cared.
This same disease bled into my own journey when I entered the world of trading around 2021. As a trader and content creator today, I see the massive circus currently taking place in crypto and forex markets.
Beginners and teenagers flood in, convinced by so-called "influencers" that trading is an effortless path to riches. You see them flashing stacks of cash, rented cars, expensive jewelry, and flawless PNL (profit and loss) statements that suggest they never lose. As discussed in the video, revenue and gross numbers mean nothing without knowing the true profit, leverage, and expenses behind them. I was once swayed by those emotions and watched them closely, which is why I am grateful I learned through self-study rather than buying overpriced courses.
The modern playbook is simple: flash fake luxury, harvest attention by preying on the emotions of those desperate for wealth, and then sell them an expensive, hollow course or blueprint.
The problem worsened into recent years, with teenagers who have barely six months or a year of experience posing as seasoned experts, launching mentorship groups, and selling courses.

Because at the end of the day, modern influencer marketing targets raw human emotion—money, property, and fake numbers. Do not easily fall for people displaying a level of success whose origins you cannot verify.

They do not walk down the street draped in jewelry to prove they are rich. They do not need to post earnings screenshots on social media just to gain validation. Those who possess genuine power and wealth are quiet. They are entirely focused on creating value, while those pretending to be rich are focused entirely on maintaining the applause.
There are only two kinds of people in this world: those who build foundations without noise, and those who perform on stage until the lights run out.
